From new father photoshoot to author of New Mom's Guide to New Dads

Guest post by Andrew Shaw

I can distinctly remember having our preemie twins in a photoshoot at the Mudpies studio, which, somehow, was five years ago. Or yesterday. It all seems the same.

My wife and I fell in love with the work of the Mudpies team that we saw adorning the walls inside Wellspan York Hospital near the NICU. When we found out they can expertly handle premature babies, we were sold.

At that point, with so much uncertainty in those early days of our second and third kids (we had a 2-year-old son as well), we would take any certainty we could get.

The girls ended up looking absolutely perfect, as did our son with a bashful smile as he was placed near them. My wife looked gorgeous holding them, too.

In the years since, we’ve done many Mudpies shoots, with their work now adorning our own walls. Newborns becoming infants. Infants becoming (loud) toddlers. Toddlers becoming… well some days it seems like teenagers but the calendar says they are 5, 5, and almost 7.

I’ve grown a lot, too, since those early days. I learned how much pressure is on a mom to do everything for everyone. And how expectations vary so much for dads — it was a surprise to see a dad in the NICU, for instance.

That all helped inspire me to write The New Mom’s Guide to New Dads, my effort to help mothers understand what it’s like to be that anxious, confused new father who is trying to pretend he has it together. I tell my own stories of #dadlife, tap into expert advice, and mostly help new moms get into the mentality of a new dad so they can have better conversations and a better, shared empathy for each other.

I don’t know what life will bring me next as a dad. Who knows what our next portrait will be like — what stories we’ll have shared since the last one. But I do know we are all better when we improve our communication and understand that there’s a lot more that goes into parenting than the perfect Instagram shot or the memorable canvas that hands on a wall. All of the life that happens in between those moments — that’s what makes those picture-perfect moments worth saving.

Oh, what a WILD ONE he was...

This little man was smiling for the camera from the second he walked in the door. His mom and dad had him styled with his customized shirt and his Air Jordans for his One Year Session. We got to capture some baby rolls, his giggles and a more serious side too. We ended the session with a Mickey Mouse cakesmash! He wasn’t necessarily a fan of the cake but you certainly can’t tell that from all the cheesin’ going on. What a little ham!!!

You're about to be a BIG BROTHER!!

What an exciting promotion…becoming a Big Bro!! This little guy cannot wait, or so he thinks, lol!! We can only hope that his baby sister loves the camera as much as he does. We love to be able to incorporate some indoor and outdoor shots in these bump sessions. It was actually fairly cold the day of this session, but momma was a champ about it. And she could not have been more stunning in this mauve gown. She and her 2 handsome boys made our job easy. We can’t wait to meet you baby girl!

How can it be???

I feel like it was just last week that we blogged your Sitter Session. How could you be ONE already?!?!? We at MnB love to watch you grow and we feel so blessed to be able to capture it for you to have for years to come. So many of our clients are interested in purchasing our Baby Plan and for good reason. Time flies, you are busy with work and life and a baby! We make sure that you don’t have to worry about capturing the months along the way.

This little lady is something else! She is so full of personality and the way she wrinkles that nose just melts our hearts! We love to incorporate images from birth to show how they grow. All that sass in one year! And can you say CAKE!!! She was a fan for sure!

Dear Sweet Mamas with miracles on board,

We know this is always such a fleeting journey filled with so many unknowns, and now even more so.

As we all navigate through this trial we pray you will find peace in knowing your baby is safe and warm.

We pray you will find comfort in those around you.

We pray you discover the strength that we know roars within you.

The strength to meander this uncharted territory. The strength to go to those visits without your partner....as you are not alone, we are all pulling for you and your baby is right there with you feeling every movement and hearing your comforting voice.

Dear Mama, we will be here on the other side to capture the endless, fleeting moments to be forever remembered.

Find comfort in knowing you are created for such a time as this and we are all going to be ok.

Xoxo,
Mudpies N’ Butterflies

Dear high school and college seniors,

Millersville double branded.jpg

Dear high school and college seniors,

We see you.

Every year, we get to spend different seasons with you, capturing the essence of who you are to film forever. You have been a tremendous and favorite part of the work we do.

You share really personal insight into your personalities. You show us your passions.

Some of you have been photographed by us since your mamas were tenderly carrying you as bumps.

Some of you have styled sessions together and shared that freeze-frame.

We've seen you laugh. We've seen the serious you. We've glimpsed the hope and potential for a bright new beginning once you walk down the aisle to leave behind high school or college forever.

And so, as these times unfold and we all do what we must to ensure that everyone stay as healthy as possible, we are sad with you that you won't have some of the same "lasts" that you've always looked forward to.

You are our heroes, you know. And we'll always talk later on about how so many of your generation - YOU - so selflessly stayed at home, forgoing the traditional rites of passage to keep all of us safer. We are seeing right now, not only the beautiful you in this moment, but also the adults who you are becoming.

Dear seniors, we celebrate you. We are already looking forward again to finding your spirit with our lenses. And dear seniors, we thank you.

Much love,
Mudpies N' Butterflies

This Little Mechanic Turns ONE

At Mudpies N Butterflies Photography we are always up for helping to turn your visions and dreams into reality. This one year/cakesmash session was no exception. Dad wanted to incorporate anything 4x4 or vintage/classic car related so we hit up our guys at Mount Zion Offroad for some guidance. We started the session with some fun at their shop (the family pet even got to come along and play shop dog for the day!!) and headed back to the studio for some smash time. Here are a few of our favorites!

Important Message for Our Clients about Social Distancing

Mudpies N' Butterflies and The Loft York have been working for a while to move processes online to deliver you the best all-around experiences, before, during, and post-session. Your vision... Easy. Stress-free. Beautiful.

This means that, in these times of important caution, we can continue to deliver most of our services and still maintain best practices around social distancing so that we all stay safe and healthy.

We have always practiced aseptic technique in our (three) studio environments. Our team includes several highly-trained medical professionals, who ensure that we do our part to provide safe spaces for everyone from zero days old to, well, as old as they come. 😉

Because of hospital policies right now limiting visits, we're pausing our in-hospital sessions. But, especially if you have ideas for sessions in alternate or outdoor settings, please don't hesitate to reach out to us to share your vision with us.

Spring is about to break upon us wonderfully, and helping you create and capture those special moments is a passion that fuels our work... Healthfully, artfully, beautifully you.

Stay safe and healthy, everyone. Much love, Mudpies N' Butterflies and The Loft York 😘

Down on the Farm

We have been blessed to be able to watch this wonderful family grow into a tribe of four. We recently captured big brothers 2nd birthday milestone as well as the birth announcement on their family farm so it was no shock when Mommy and Daddy requested some themes including tractors and anything farm or horse related. Baby was 4 weeks old during the session but slept like a dream and we were able to capture some amazing memories for this sweet family. Enjoy some of the images from big brothers session on their farm as well as little brothers session in our newborn suite.

Anytime is Family Time

We all know that time flies by. We have so many families that contact and say they haven’t had pictures taken since their almost teenagers or now teenagers were babies/toddlers. No matter if it is spring, summer, winter or fall, we always have some fun ideas and locations to capture your family. Trust us, you won’t forget it and we always will make it enjoyable for everyone!

All the Graffiti Vibes

Model shoots always lead to some pretty amazing locations. This winter we had this incredible looking guy to work with. Not only is he a college student, but also a model and actor and has an insane sense of style. And, can we talk about the hair?!?! GORGEOUS!!!!! He was home from Arizona for a few weeks, so we took advantage of the snow and graffiti vibes. The results are amazing!

Let's bring allllll the families together!

Time flies, there is no doubt about that! Families grow, move miles apart, get remarried, have more kids…but time stops for no-one! Capture these memories when you have the chance. Whether you are all local or visiting from across the world, take a moment to get them all together. We promise to make it fun and painless. We will capture all the different grouping possibilities as well. And we can promise that you will have amazing images to keep for years to come.
